Pair of Regency Period Giltwood Footstools c.1810

The scarce pair of handsome Regency period footstools, of square tapered form, each standing on four brass lion’s paw feet of wonderful patination and quality, the giltwood carcasses being untouched and distressed with age, the off white upholstery being original, and the wholes surviving from the first quarter of nineteenth century England.
The stools are sturdy and stable and there is no worm or major damages. They stand well and there are no losses aside from the flecked losses to the gilt. The upholstery is seemingly original, and we love it, though they are ready to reupholster if so desired and they could probably do with re-webbing. The feet are glorious and stable with some cracks to the underside bracing struts and vacant holes where some concealed runners would have once been in place. The giltwood is un-meddled with and thus beautifully original.
The influences on Regency design and taste were legion from Sheraton’s neoclassicism, Henry Holland’s Anglo-French taste, the Greek revival of Thomas Hope, and the Chinoiserie favoured by the Prince Regent, to an interest in the Gothic, Old English and rustic. The Regency attitude to interior decoration often involved treating each room as a unit with individual furnishings and wall decorations in harmony of theme or colour scheme.
As original as they come and a rare find too.
