Pair of Victorian Chiné Vases, Doulton Lambeth

Here we have a pair of elegant late Victorian Ceramic Vases in the Chiné Gilt style. The vases have low feet, bulbous bodies and tall necks with leaf decoration at the bottom. The bodies are decorated in the chiné gilt style created by pressing lace into the clay shortly after the pieces had come off the wheel. After first firing this was then hand painted and gilded. The technique was developed by John Slater, Doulton's senior manager in the 1880s, and remained regularly in use until the First World War and occasionally in the 1920s and 1930s.
The vases were made at Doulton's Lambeth factory in London and date to between 1891 and 1900. One vase is clearly stamped on the base with the dO mark for Lizzie Marie Daintree, one of Doulton's Senior Assistants who worked at the Lambeth factory in the 1880s and 1890s, with the marks on the other being indistinct.
Condition of both vases is extremely good, with no chips or cracks and just the minimal surface wear that you would expect after over 120 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each vase is 25cm / 9.8ins high and 13cm / 5.1ins across at the widest point. The pair together weigh in at 1.5kg / 53.1oz.
As is often the case with Doulton Lambeth ware there are a variety of marks on the underside of the base. The key ones are the Doulton Lambeth scalloped roundel with the word England underneath which dates the piece to 1891 or later. Secondly the Doulton & Slaters Patent, which was used on the Chiné series of vases and thirdly the dO artists' mark for Lizzie Marie Daintree.
Shipping in the UK is £16.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the vases.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
