This is a wonderful, large and boldly executed pastel portrait of a mustachioed man. He is wearing a high buttoned jacket, a wing collar and tie and has a well cultivated blonde handlebar mustache. From the clothing and the age of the paper, we would estimate the date of this pastel to be 1880-1900. Whoever the artist was, he or she had a great afinity with the medium.

The pastel is signed quite clearly in dark red, but, unfortunately, it is the writing that is unclear. The signature appears to be R. Mu or a, followed by lh or th and we can't read the rest. As the face has a somewhat Germanic or Prussian look to our eyes, this could be its origin. If anyone recognises the signature, we would be grateful if you could contact us.

The pastel is well framed in a 5" reeded gilt frame and slip and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
