Rare Knightly Crusader Sword, Inscription,11thC


Extremely Rare Knightly Crusader Sword
from the times of the First Crusade. “Oakeshott” typology type X.
Late 11th century knightly sword with full inlaid inscription on the face of the blade: BENEDICATINT? surrounded by 2 crosses. Reverse inscription: 3 crosses within circles, which represent the Holy Trinity. The inscription has all inlays still in place: latten (alloy of brass and zinc)or brass or gold?.
The sword was found in the river Thames in 1950s and is in fine condition including the tip and the hilt.
There is a small area of delamination on one edge of the blade (ca 3in - shown in the last picture).
Conserved and stable.
