Regency Mahogany cased Flushing Water Closet

A rare Regency Period Mahogany Cased flushing water closet with water reservoir and pump action flush fitted with a transfer printed blue and white liner with a cartouche stating “ By His Majesty’s Royal Letters Patent Granted to S. Hawkins for an improvement upon WATER CLOSETS &c.&c. No. 167 Fleet Street” flanked by images of the vital components to his WCs.
The gravity flush hinged flap similarly decorated and the whole bowl printed in blue with the view of Doveridge Hall, Derbyshire. The source print for this pattern is from John Preston Neale’s “Views of the seats of Noblemen and Gentlemen in England and Wales.
Steven Hawkins applied for a patent in 1821 for which he received a royal letters patent in 1822.
