Richard Webster I, Royal Exchange London.c 1780

A good Georgian bracket antique clock by noted maker Richard Webster I, Royal Exchange, London, c.1780.
The 'Ellicott' style case is unusual in that it is made in solid mahogany rather than the normal method of veneering an oak carcass in mahogany veneers. The 'bell top' case with carrying handle, has brass beaded glazed panels to the side, hinged front door edged in brass with deep convex glass fitted into a brass bezel to the front, moulded glazed rear door all above a moulded plinth with brass block feet. The 8" silvered dial with blued steel hands, is well engraved with Roman numeral hour markers and Arabic minute markers and signed 'Webster, London' in fine srolling script. The strike/silent lever sits above the XII hour marking.
The fine double fusee movement has 5 knopped pillars, unusual 'tik-tak' escapement and runs for 8 days. The repeat mechanism strikes the current hour by pulling the chord fitted through the side of the case, the hours striking on the bell unless the strike /silent function is set to silent. The back plate is finely engraved with scrolling decoration and fully signed 'R. Webster, Exchange Alley, London', with engraved pendulum.
Richard Webster I was a member of the noted Webster family of clockmakers which spanned two centuries. More information on the Webster family can be found on our main website. Unless otherwise stated all barometer prices include local delivery (50 miles). We deliver personally throughout the country, please contact us for prices excluding delivery or to discuss delivery further than 50 miles.
