Rolls Royce Draughtsman's Desk

A huge (9') and fabulous Art Deco Rolls Royce draughtsman's desk. This wonderful oak desk is one of three that came out of the Derby factory having been in store since the 1970's. The desk comprises of a single drawer which will gladly take A0 size paper being 152.5cm wide and 92.5 deep, beneath this is an end cupboard which we feel is a later addition however matched in quite nicely. To the centre pedestal is a double drawer unit and to the other end pedestal is a collection of very deep pigeon holes to take your drawings and another single drawer. Above the left hand section is a pull out side table and another single drawer fitted out with dividers. Throughout this magnificent desk are the original bronze Art Deco pull handles which have been sympathetically polished to enhance each of the drawers. During the lifetime of this great piece it will have surely seen some remarkable people at work designing some of the most iconic engines in the world. The 1930's was the era of broken land, air and sea records. Sir Malcolm Campbell broke the land speed record in Bluebird at 272.46 mph in 1933. In 1937 George Eyston smashed this with 312.2 mph in Thunderbolt, powered by two Rolls-Royce 'R' engines. World War II shifted focus to aero engines at the Derby Works and a new factory in Crewe, commissioned by the Air Ministry, which became the home of Rolls-Royce in 1946. The war changed the perception of Rolls-Royce from a "brilliant sprat in the ocean of technology" into a world contender in aero propulsion. This was demonstrated with the Gloster Meteor which, powered by Rolls-Royce Derwent V engines, established a new world air speed record of 606 mph. circa 1930-40
