Silver goliath Stauffer pocket watch & chain

Antique silver goliath Stauffer pocket watch and chain.
This is a super example of a goliath watch which, unusually, has a silver case and a heavy chain that is perfectly proportioned and sits beautifully with the watch.
The watch has a Swiss stem-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement is signed ‘The Atlas Watch’. Stauffer’s factory in La Chaux-de-Fonds was called Atlas and in the 19th Century they produced a range of lever watches called "The Atlas Watch", the brand name was registered by Stauffer in 1885..
The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover.
The watch measures 69mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. Unusually for a goliath pocket watch, the case is made of silver. The two back covers have Continental hallmarks for .935 silver, so slightly purer than .925 sterling silver. The case is in lovely condition with just light surface marks, nothing serious at all.
The glass lens is in lovely condition.
The dial is in very nice condition too with original pin-set hands, a large subsidiary seconds dial and an outer minute track.
The watch comes with a large heavy silver single chain, 32cm long including the T-bar and the clasp. Each of the links has a lion silver mark and one has a maker’s mark for the Birmingham chain maker E Whitehouse & Son. The chain has one of the largest dog clips we have seen, perfectly in proportion to the watch and chain. The maker’s mark is difficult to decipher but the date letter is for 1898. The chain weighs in at 85.3g.
The watch and chain come in a new presentation box.
ALL PRICES INCLUDE UK POSTAGE (excluding Northern Ireland).
Please contact us before placing international orders so that we can advise of shipping prices and to see if customs regulations allow us to post watches to your country.

All of our watches are checked over before listing, and are also checked for accuracy which is usually within around +/- two to three minutes over 24 hours (unless otherwise stated), which is considered respectable for a vintage watch.
We are a VAT registered company and all purchases are covered by Consumer Regulations.
Credit / debit card purchases can be made over the telephone on 01386 750238 or you can proceed via the \'Buy Securely\' button on each listing page.
We are an on-line only business and do not have facilities for callers. Our offices are open from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.
With regards to appraisals / valuations, we receive a huge number of information requests each day and unfortunately do not have the manpower to deal with them all individually. Our advice would be to contact a local auctioneer for a full appraisal.
