Maher was born in Newcastle and later became a teacher in art at the Rutherford Grammar school.He was a frequent exhibitor at the Bewick Club and the Artists of Northern Counties Exhibitions at the Laing Gallery. He exhibited from 1910 until late in his life. He later taught at Armstrong College which became Kings College Newcastle University
