We are very pleased to offer this lovely watercolour by the very collectible artist THOMAS 'TOM' ROWDEN, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner. The painting depicts a small herd of Dartmoor ponies, grazing near a moorland pool. The rolling tors of Dartmoor are in the distance.
This is one of a pair of paintings by this artist that we are currently listing.
THOMAS 'TOM' ROWDEN, was born in Exeter on 26th May 1842, the son of a carpenter. He trained as a carpenter and joiner, but in 1859, having a thirst for adventure, enlisted in the Royal Marines and served until 1880.
He moved back to Exeter shortly after leaving the Marines and commenced a career as a self-taught artist. He exhibited from 1883 mainly at the Elands Gallery, but also exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy. He painted mainly moorland scenes with wild ponies, cattle and sheep, and these subjects became his main subject matter. Dartmoor and the Highlands of Scotland are his normal locations.
Although listing a London address for a short while in the 1880s, he lived most of his life in Exeter, where he died on 15th May 1926. He is buried at Exwick cemetery.
His details are listed in The Dictionary of British Artists (Collectors Club), The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood and The Dictionary of British Watercolour Artists by H. Mallalieu.
Auctions results achieved for works by this artist are available at artprice (268 listings), findartinfo (134), artnet (89) and arcadja (81). The record price for one of his watercolours since 2000 is £1,600.
The painting is mounted with washlines and is framed in a 1 1/4" gilt frame. It is ready to hang.
