Vernon de B. Ward ARBA Oil Still Life


We are offering for sale this beautifully executed oil on canvas painting by the British artist VERNON DE BEAUVOIR WARD, who has signed the painting VERNON WARD in the lower right hand corner. The painting depicts a pottery vase containing tiger lillies, white lillies and delphiniums standing on a cloth covered table.
VERNON DE BEAUVOIR WARD was born in Hampstead, London on 12th October 1905, the son of the artist and art dealer Albert Ward, and was encouraged to develop his interest in art from an early age. He was educated at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic School in Highgate and subsequently studied art at the Slade School under Henry Tonks. He was elected an Associate Member of The Royal Society of British Artists at the young age of 21 in 1926. He lived at 8 South Hill Park Gardens, Hampstead for many years and also in an apartment overlooking the river in Twickenham.
He painted principally in oil, although there are some watercolours. His subject range was diverse, including landscapes, figure and portrait studies, floral still life and birds. His work was extensively published in the form of prints, as well as greetings cards and jigsaw puzzles by publishers such as Frost and Reed, Solomon and Whitehead and W. M. Sharpe of Bradford.
He exhibited at The Royal Society of British Artists and the Royal Oil Painters Institute. He is listed in The Dictionary of British Artists and Grant Waters Dictionary of British Artists. There is extensive information and examples of his work on google.
Auction listings for prices achieved by his work and some examples of it may be found at artprice.com (250 listings), findartinfo.com (93), artnet.com (155) and askart.com (22). His work also features regularly in Hislop's Guide to the UK Art Market.
The painting is framed in a 3 1/4" ornate, swept, gilt frame, which suits it very well. It is ready to hang.
