Very rare Derby White Gilt Squirrel, c1810

Very rare Derby White/Gilt Squirrel.
Produced c1810, it is probably based on the Meissen "Squirrel with nut" model by J J Kaendler c1733.
The model is in white with gilt trim and edging.
The base has the number "2" incised.
Only two other examples of this model are known (numbered "1" and "3").
The squirrel stands approximately 8 cm (3") tall.
This example is in very good condition.
Overall the glaze is crazed and there is a fair amount of kiln dust scorching, typical of these early wares. You do have to study this model under a magnifying glass to see all of this, as it is barely noticeable to the naked eye.
There is a tiny graze to the knuckle of one of the squirrel's hands and there is wear to the gilt trim/edges.
There are also two rough spots, one each on the top of his ears. We believe these to be from the manufacturing and no glaze coverage rather than damage.
No other chips or cracks have been noted, and there is no evidence of any restoration.
Selling price includes free UK postage. For other countries, please contact us for a quote.
