Victoria Tea Caddy by Jennens & Bettridge

A very fine early Victorian Tea Caddy, by Jennens & Bettridge. Circa 1840.
This beautiful papier-mache example in concave bombe form, features two separate tea compartments underneath the box's lid, each with a mother of pearl handle. The original lock is in working order, and the key present.
On the box's ebony exterior, mother of pearl inlay is used to display an Imperial Chinese garden scene, complete with buildings, and heavy floral decoration. This is further enhanced with the use of gilt paintwork, still beautifully detailed and intact, despite its near 200 year age.
The box sits over 4 simple feet in ogee form, and the gilt decoration around the circumference of the lower side is in immaculate condition.
Jennens & Bettridge were one the finest makers of Tea Caddies throughout the Georgian and Victorian period the maker's signature runs along the underside of the box which includes the commissioned stamp as official suppliers to the Royal Household.
