RARE sterling silver Kigu sterling silver Kigu powder compact vintage compact compact mirror 1962. A beautiful fully hallmarked sterling silver Kigu 'Oxford Series' powder compact with a delightful etched design on the lid & base.This design was described as 'Shantung' by the makers. The silversmiths have decorated this solid silver vanity to resemble Shantung which is a type of silk fabric historically from the province of Shandong It is similar to Dupioni, but is slightly thinner and has less irregular threads. Shantung is often used for bridal gowns as it is light delicate & lends an elegant look to garments. The lid has a border decorated with guilloche engraving & stylized floral motif set with a diamond shaped border. The lid lifts to reveal an excellent mirror. All clasps & hinges work perfectly. The inner lid is signed Kigu within the triangular registered trade mark. The Kigu 'sliding catch' works perfectly & the whole compact is very attractive. It was assayed at London in 1962. This solid silver compact mirror measures almost 7 cm X almost 7 cm & weighs 117.6 grams. Free lavishly illustrated history of this piece included.
