Watercolour Armorial Joseph Bell & Son Bristol

We are offering this Watercolour of an Armorial Shield by the Bristol Studio of Joseph Bell & Son. This watercolour was part of the Herbert Kennard Collection, which was recently at auction after his death in March 2020 at the age of 100. Mr. Kennard was a great collector, particularly of satinwood antique furniture and objets d'art His interesting obituary is available online, but he appears to have been a wonderful eccentric.
We have discovered that the watercolour is a representation of the arms of Bristol, which is fitting since that is where Joseph Bell started his stained glass studio in 1840.
Joseph Bell & Son (1840-1996)
Stained glass firm based in Bristol. The firm was initially established by Joseph Bell (1810-1895), and continued to be run by his son (Frederick Henry Bell 1847-1899) and grandson (Frederick George 1878-1967) until 1923. Each generation was involved in the design and painting of the glass, with additional artists brought in to design and make commissions.
Joseph Bell & Son was sold to Arnold Robinson, who had already undertaken commissions for the firm. After his death in 1955, Basil Barber, who had previously worked as chief cartoonist for Ninian Comper and joined the studio in 1953, ran the firm until Geoffrey Robinson, son of Arnold Robinson, took over the firm in 1959. The studio closed after Geoffrey Robinson's retirement in 1996.
The watercolour is double mounted in shaped mounts with gold edge and is framed in a 5/8 inch gilt frame. It will be supplied with all new brass hangers, new brass picture wire and will be ready to hang.
