Antique Italian painting from the 17th century
A splendid 17th-century religious painting. Oil on canvas artwork depicting the Virgin of Sorrows in a moment of compassion on Calvary. Her expression, and especially her hands crossed over her chest, suggest both grief and abandonment to divine will.
A painting of strong emotional intensity, a highly sought-after subject for private commissions in the Baroque era for domestic devotion. The painting, in terms of style and color scheme, is central Italian, presumably from the Emilian school, given its similarities with the works of Sassoferrato and Guido Reni.
Artwork of great pictorial quality, capable of still appealing to the viewer today, ideal for a classical setting or a collection dedicated to 17th-century Italian art. The magnificent 19th-century wood and plaster frame is beautifully decorated, with some signs of aging.
