This is a wonderful and rare original naïve watercolour painting by Edward Henry Dixon depicting the Copenhagen House tavern and tea rooms which used to stand in what is now the Caledonian park N7.
The painting shows the house and fields with small cottages in the foreground and Highgate in the distance. The painting depicts the scene from 1840, though the painting was created in 1878. The painting is signed and dated by Dixon bottom right.
Edward Henry Dixon ( 1822-1884 ) was renowned for his depictions of every day life in North London at a time when this part of London was undergoing massive development.

The painting is offered in its original gilt frame, with the original label by Dixon pasted onto the back. The label describes the scene, though unfortunately some of the writing is illegible.

The painting is 35cm x 24.4cm and the frame is 55cm x 44.5cm.

Condition

The condition of the painting is generally pretty good. The colours are bright, there is just the occasional small patch of spotting. The mount is stained and needs replacing. The frame has quite a few losses and is generally a little tatty.
