F. J. Widgery Watercoloour Valley Of Rocks Lynton

We are offering for sale this lovely and large watercolour/gouache by the artist Frederick John Widgery, who has signed the painting F. J. Widgery in the lower left hand corner and inscribed it below the edge of the mount 'Valley of Rocks, Lynton'.
he Valley of Rocks, sometimes called Valley of the Rocks, is a dry valley that runs parallel to the coast in north Devon, England, about 1 kilometre (0.6 mi) to the west of the village of Lynton. It is a popular tourist destination, noted for its herd of feral goats, and for its landscape and geology.
FREDERICK JOHN WIDGERY, 1861-1942, was the younger son of the famous artist WILLIAM WIDGERY, 1826-1893. He was a very prolific landscape and coastal painter. He studied at Exeter School of Art, under Verlat in Antwerp and under Herkomer at Bushey. He was a magistrate, Lord Mayor of Exeter in 1903-4, Chairman of Exeter Public Art Gallery and a Captain in the Volunteers. He painted landscapes of South West England, especially Dartmoor and the cliffs and moors of Devon and Cornwall. He lived in Exeter. Examples of his work may be found in Exeter museum.
His biographical details may be found in all the major art reference books. He exhibited 5 paintings at the Royal Academy, 3 at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, 3 at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour and 6 at the Royal Oil Painters Institute. Auction results may be found at artprice.com (748 listings), findartinfo.com (299) and artnet.com (281). His works are often listed in Hislop's Guide to the UK Art Market, where, in 2006, 46 watercolours were sold at Bearne's at prices between £250 and £2,500, an average price of £500.
The painting has been newly double mounted in two tone acid free mountboard to complement and is newly framed in a 2 inch gilt frame. It will be supplied with new brass hangers, new brass picture wire and will be ready to hang.
