J. A. Lynas Gray Watercolour 'A Devon Homestead'

We are delighted to offer for sale this lovely watercolour by the artist John Abernethy Lynas Grey, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner and dated it 1912. He has entitled it verso 'A Devon Homestead' and signed it J. Lynas Gray. It is a very pleasing painting and the figure work is excellent and detailed, as indeed is the rest of the subject matter.
The painting depicts an old Devon cottage, with moss covered thatch, on the coast of Devon. The gardens in filled with a profusion of flowers in bloom and there is a flowering creeper over the door. On the track in front of the cottage is a young girl wearing a bonnet and apron over her dress and carrying an infant. Further back along the track is her mother, who is standing with a gentleman, discussing something they are holding between them, possibly some material. There are three geese near the door of the cottage. In the left background, it is possible to see the sea and a distant headland, coloured pink by the setting sun.
John Henry Abernethy Lynas Grey, was born in Oxton, Cheshire in 1869. He studied at Liverpool School of Art and in London. He was a Landscape, Figure and Genre painter, principally in watercolours. He lived in various places, principally in the North East, before moving to Carnarvonshire, where he died in 1933, according to the death records.
He exhibited at The Walker AG in Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham, Royal Cambrian Academy, Royal Hibernian Academy and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours. His paintings achieve very good prices at auction and these records may be found at artprice (91 listings), artnet (36), findartinfo (31) and arcadja (20).
He is listed in The Dictionary of British Artists (Collector's Club) and Painters in the Northern Counties of England and Wales by Professor Dennis Child.
The watercolour has been newly double mounted in two tone acid free mountboard and is newly framed in a 1 1/8" bronzed gilt frame to suit. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
