Regency Rosewood Slide Top Davenport Desk

A super Regency rosewood Davenport dating to c.1820 and featuring a rare brass grille front flanked by acanthus carved corbels and fluted pilasters. The sliding top with a pierced brass gallery and pen drawer above a black and gilt tooled leather inset slide and four graduated drawers with another slide and four dummy drawers to the opposing side, with original turned knobs, brass keyhole liners and locks and raised on reeded and turned legs with brass cup castors. The writing slope with the original inset blind tooled burgundy leather lifting to reveal a mahogany lined interior fitted with two rosewood fronted short drawers above two faux drawers with box wood surrounds and turned knob handles. This fine quality example is likely to have been made by Gillows of Lancaster who are credited with the producing the design for a Captain Davenport, these earlier examples are therefore often considered to be campaign or military pieces of antique furniture due to the compact portable size.
This example is in good condition having been sympathetically cleaned and polished using traditional methods, the leathers are worn but still useable and the fabric backing is a replacement. One piece of brass grill missing from the top right and corner of veneer lost from the right slide. Feint ring marks to the back and an old shrinkage line to the back filled & polished. With the slope pulled forward comfortable to work at with the slides providing useful additional space.
