Unusual 19th Century Mahogany Campaign Box / Chest

A fine and substantial mahogany and brass campaign box / chest of unusual configuration.
The box boasts a drop-front with Bramah lock, which opens to reveal two interior reversible trays with marbled pastedowns to one side, and a rich plush purple velvet to the other. The labels bear inscriptions relating to tailoring, thus it is possible that this was a military tailor's chest for carrying threads, buttons etc, with the plush underside of the trays providing a soft work surface and/or storage for needles and pins.
The key is absent (provided key is for decorative purposes only) but the lid can still be sealed shut by using the two slide locks to the front of the chest. There are signs of wear commensurate with age in areas but generally the box remains in a very good condition throughout with truly exceptional colour and patina.
An extremely unusual and attractive piece.
Dimensions:-
Width: 45.5cm
Height: 33.5cm
Depth: 33cm
