Victorian Kidney Shaped Writing Table

Circa 1870, exhibition quality Victorian kidney shaped writing table made by Johnstone & Jeanes. The maker's mark 'Johnstone & Jeanes 67 New Bond Street London' is stamped on the top edge of the drawer. The desk is made from the finest quality timbers, walnut, tulip wood, king wood, mahogany and many others in the marquetry inlays. The kidney shaped top has a walnut thumb moulded edge, an inlaid walnut veneered frieze with a drawer in the concave centre and the bottom edge of the frieze has a gilded metal beaded mould. The writing surface has a red tooled leather decorated with gilt detailed spiral around the edge. The spiral decoration is reflected around the top edge of the desk in marquetry with a spiral surrounding a vine and is kingwood cross banded. The table has a twin support base with four short cabriole legs that have concealed gilt brass patent casters. The legs are carved with acanthus leaves and decorated with panels of parquetry that has gilded mouldings, the gilding is repeated on the egg and dart mouldings just below the vertical supports. The top is supported on a group of three pillars at each end, a pair of turned pillars each side of a square vase shaped pillar. The turned pillars are fluted with acanthus carving at the base and sit on small square blocks that have marquetry inlaid panels. The central square vase shaped pillar is exquisitely carved with flowers that overlap the gilded edge. The twin supports are joined by a turned and fluted cross rail decorated with carved and gilded bosses and mouldings. Johnstone & Jeanes were makers of fine quality antique furniture from the formation of their partnership in 1842. Johnstone had been in partnership with Robert Jupe who together patented the metamorphic dining table, but after a falling out Jupe went his own way. Johnstone & Jeanes exhibited at all the major exhibitions in London in 1851 and 1862 and also in Paris in 1878. The Royal Collection has a piece of Johnstone & Jeanes antique furniture, a walnut veneered table.
