Victorian Silver Sugar Tongs, J.W. Barrier, 1889

This is a smart pair of Victorian Sterling Silver Sugar Tongs. The tongs are in the Old English style with bright cut feathering along the edges of the arms and hinge. There is a Gothic letter W engraved on the hinge of the tongs.
The sugar tongs are made in London by John William Barrier and date to 1889. There is not a lot of information available about John Barrier but he registered his makers' mark with Goldsmiths' Hall in 1872 and was still in business in the first few years of the 20th century. On the census records he consistently describes himself as a military ornament maker, so this was presumably the principal work that he was involved in.
Condition of the tongs is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the bare minimum of superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 130 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The sugar tongs are 10.8cm / 4.2ins long and weigh a very respectable 23.9g / 0.84oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the insides of the arms are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter O for 1889, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the JWB makers' mark for John William Barrier.
Shipping in the UK is £4 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For.
