George V Silver Cream Ladle, Elkington & Co, 1929

1 of 6
This is a good quality George V Sterling Silver Cream Ladle in the revived Dog Nose pattern. The Dog Nose pattern originally developed during the reign of Queen Anne and was the dominant flatware pattern between 1700 and 1715. It was then revived in the early 20th century. This ladle has the addition of a thread all around both the upper and undersides of the stem and the letters K.W.I. engraved on the underside. Perhaps a branch of the Women's Institute?
The cream ladle is a well made piece in a good gauge of silver by world famous silversmiths Elkington & Co in Birmingham and dates to 1929. The firm was founded by George Elkington in 1836 and excelled in both Sterling Silver and silver plate (patenting the world's first silver electroplating system in 1838). They remained at the forefront of English silverware up until 1963 when they were merged with Mappin & Webb and Walker & Hall to form British Silverware.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and only the most minimal superficial surface wear that has to be expected after the passage of time. It has clearly been well looked after for over 90 years. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cream ladle is 13cm / 5.1ins long and weighs a very respectable 29.3g / 1oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter E for 1929 and the distinctive E & Co makers' mark for Elkington & Co.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail Tracked 24.
