This is an absolutely beautifully executed head and shoulders portrait oil on canvas of a sable and white Rough Collie by the artist W. Johnston, who has signed the painting in red in the lower left hand corner and dated it 1904. Rough Collies were originally bred for herding and used in Scotland and England.

Unfortunately we have been unable to trace the artist as yet. All the W. Johnstons that are listed have a middle initial and the work is dissimilar to this painting. We have also checked all the W. Johnstons that have signatures listed and cannot find a match. It is possible that he or she did not exhibit, in which case they would not appear in any of our reference books, although we could find no auction results in recent years either.

The painting is framed in its original ornate bronzed and gilt frame and slip and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.

Medium: Oils on canvas

Condition: Very good. The canvas is clean and taut and there are no repairs. The original frame is in very good condition for its age.
