The nineteenth century gilded Corpus Christi, on red tortoiseshell veneered crucifix with scroll inscribed INRI above, the whole on a stepped ebony base.

The corpus is in good overall condition, barring one old repair to the apex where the four joins meet, this repair was an amateur one and as such there is a little bit of movement in this area. The rest of the items is in sound order with a good patination to the figure.

Cross symbols predate Christianity, and ancient objects bearing crosses have been found in most parts of the world and the cross is the most well-known symbol of the Christian faith. It represents the death and resurrection of Jesus and serves as a reminder of our own sins and our need for redemption. The acronym INRI (Iēsus Nazarēnus, Rēx Iūdaeōrum) that we see above the figure represents the Latin inscription which in English reads as "Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews".
