2 x 19th C. Dutch Silver Serving Spoons, 1893 Dutch Silver Netherlands %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
Here we have a beautiful cased pair of 19th Century Dutch 833 Grade Silver Serving Spoons. The spoons come in their original smart red box with a satin lined lid and a rich red velvet bed to hold the spoons. The spoons have pierced bowls with scalloped rims and are elegantly engraved with flowers and foliage. On the underside of each stem is the date 29 Sept 1893, so these were clearly a presentation set, perhaps as a wedding gift on that date. This is a really special set.

The pair of spoons are made by famous Dutch silversmiths J.M. van Kempen & Zonen in Voorschoten, The Netherlands and date to 1893. Johannes Mattheus van Kempen founded the company in Utecht in 1789. His grandson of the same name moved the firm to Voorschoten in 1835 and they remained a family business until they merged with Begeer in 1919. They are renowned for their team of designers and the originality of their work.

Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and only the most minimal superficial surface wear that you would expect after nearly 130 years. The box is in good condition with just a few minor marks on the top and the hinges and clasp are in fine working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The larger spoon is 22.3cm / 8.8ins long and the smaller spoon is 16.2cm / 6.4ins long. The pair together weigh in at a substantial 109.3g / 3.8oz of solid silver.

The hallmarks on the undersides of the stems are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant above the number 2, showing that they are 833 / 1000 grade silver, the Minerva assay mark with the letter C on the helmet showing they were assayed in The Hague, the Gothic date letter J for 1893 and the V K below a crescent makers' mark for J.M. van Kempen & Sons.

Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the set.
