2 x Edwardian Silver Pepper Shakers, W Hutton 1909

This is an elegant pair of Edwardian Sterling Silver Pepper Shakers. The shakers have circular feet and a short pedestal stem. The pear shaped bodies have all over embossed decoration of flowers and foliage surrounding blank cartouches. The shaker tops have embossed scrolls and turned finials.
The pepper shakers were made in Birmingham by famous silversmiths William Hutton & Sons Ltd and date to 1909. William Hutton established the firm in Birmingham in 1800 but in 1832 he transferred the entire business to Sheffield. Several generations of the Hutton family followed in the business and additional manufacturing was set up in London and back in Birmingham as well as a showroom in London’s Holborn district. The firm got into trouble in the late 1920s, as so many did, and was taken over by James Dixon & Sons in 1930.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 110 years of use. Both the tops fit securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each pepper shaker stands 9.5cm / 3.7ins high and is 3.6cm / 1.4ins across at its broadest point. The pair together weigh in at a very respectable 59.7g / 2.1oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the foot of each shaker, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter k for 1909 and the distinctive W H & Ss Ld makers' mark for William Hutton & Sons Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the pepper shakers.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
