2 x Victorian Irish Silver Salt Shovels, 1839

This is a good quality Pair of Early Victorian Irish Sterling Silver Salt Shovels in the classic Fiddle pattern. The spoons each have a crest of a lion rampant holding a sword engraved at the top of their stems, which have become somewhat faded with polishing over the course of time.
The salt shovels were made in Dublin by silversmith Christopher Cummins Jnr and date to 1839. Christoper Cummins Snr registered his mark at the Dublin assay office in 1817. He was a specialist spoon maker. Christopher Cummins Jnr appears to have taken over the business somewhere around 1830, operating from premises in Great Ship Street, and continuing to produce flatware into at least the late 1860s.
Condition is very good, with just a truly tiny ding in the bowl of one shovel plus the overall superficial surface wear that you would expect after around 185 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each salt shovel is 10.4cm / 4.1ins long and the pair together weigh in at a respectable 20.2g / 0.71oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the undersides of the stems, are somewhat rubbed but can still be read. They show the crowned harp for Irish Sterling Silver, the Hibernia assay mark for Dublin, the date letter T for 1839, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the distinctive C C makers' mark for Christopher Cummins Jnr.
