2 x Victorian Pierced Silver Dishes, J. Dixon 1898

This is an elegant pair of late Victorian Sterling Silver Pierced Dishes. The dishes are oval with the pierced sides rising at each end, which are in turn decorated with a floral swag. These are versatile dishes that can be used for nuts or snacks, for sweets, as small bread baskets for the table, to hold potpourri or for any other small items.
The two dishes are made in Sheffield by well known silversmiths James Dixon & Sons and date to 1898. Founded around 1806 by James Dixon and Thomas Smith, they became James Dixon & Sons in 1823 when Thomas Smith left and was replaced by James' son William and a few years later by James Jr. Hugely successful and highly regarded, the firm remained in business into the early 1980s.
Condition is very good with just a very slight dent to the base at one end of one dish and the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 120 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each dish is 16cm / 6.3ins long, 8.3cm / 3.3ins wide and stands 3.5cm / 1.4ins high. The pair together weighs in at a very substantial 186.9g / 6.6oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the undersides of the bases, are crisp and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the Gothic date letter f for 1898 and the J.D & S makers' mark for James Dixon & Sons.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the dishes.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
