This is an elegant Cased Pair of late Victorian Sterling Silver Napkin Rings. The napkin rings are of circular capstan form with beaded rims and bands of leaf decoration around the top and bottom of the body. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind. The rings come in a fitted dome topped wooden box with dark red leather covering, a deep pink satin lining in the lid and dark pink velvet holding the rings in place.

The napkin rings were made in Birmingham in 1887, almost certainly by Joseph Hawkins. Joseph Hawkins was a Birmingham silversmith active between around 1880 and 1910. There is some uncertainty in regard to his makers’ mark but it is generally accepted that it was a simple J.H with no border. He produced a range of consistently good quality small silverware for domestic and personal use.

Condition is extremely good with no dings or dents and the barest minimum of superficial surface wear. They have clearly been well looked after for over 135 years. The box is a little scuffed on the outside but the hinge and clasp are in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each napkin ring is 4.7cm / 1.8ins in diameter and 2.5cm / 0.98ins deep. The pair together, uncased, weigh in at a very respectable 48.1g / 1.7oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks on both napkin rings are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter n for 1887, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the plain J.H makers' mark which is almost certainly that of Joseph Hawkins.
