2 x Victorian Silver Pepper Shakers, J Dixon, 1893

Here we have a fine quality Pair of late Victorian Sterling Silver Pepper Shakers. The shakers are of baluster form, with circular stepped bases, part reeded bodies and turned finials. Both shakers have been elegantly engraved with the Peile family crest of a five pointed star above a mural coronet.
The pepper shakers were made in Sheffield by renowned silversmiths James Dixon & Sons and date to 1893. With a history dating back to around 1806 when it was a partnership between James Dixon and Thomas Smith, James Dixon & Sons was one of Sheffield's foremost silversmiths and electroplaters, particularly noted for their relationship with designer Dr Christopher Dresser whose groundbreaking silver plate teapot designs for the company are still being reproduced today. They were highly successful and remained in business up until the mid 1980s when they were absorbed into British Silverware.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after 130 years of good service on the dining table. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each pepper shaker is 9.5cm / 3.7ins high and 3.9cm / 1.5ins in diameter at their widest part. The pair together weigh in at a very respectable 78.4g / 2.76oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the upper parts of the bodies and on the lids, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter a for 1893 and the J.D & S makers' mark for James Dixon & Sons.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the pepper shakers.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
