2 x Victorian Silver Salt Shovels, London, 1853

This is a good quality Pair of Victorian Sterling Silver Salt Shovels. The shovels are in the Hanoverian pattern and the insides of the bowls are gilded. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The salt shovels were made in London by renowned silversmith Henry Holland and date to 1853. The firm was founded in 1838 by Henry Holland and Thomas Frercks, who left the partnership in 1841. Henry Holland then continued by himself before being joined by his son, Henry Jnr in 1851. After Henry Snr’s retirement in 1883, John Aldwinckle and James Slater joined as partners to form Holland, Aldwinckle & Slater. The business continued to be managed by various members of these three families until the firm was bought out by Francis Higgins in 1922.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, no salt corrosion and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 170 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each salt shovel is 8.6cm / 3.4ins long and the pair together weigh in at a respectable 16.2g / 0.57oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the undersides of the stems, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter S for 1853, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the H.H makers' mark for Henry Holland.
