3 x Victorian Silver Egg Spoons, C. Boyton, 1864

This is a good quality Set of Three Victorian Sterling Silver Egg Spoons in the classic Fiddle pattern. The spoons have the distinctive shield shaped bowl that identifies them as egg spoons and the initial P elegantly engraved at the tops of the stems.
The spoons were made in London by Charles Boyton (II) and date to 1864. The firm was founded in London by Charles Boyton (I) in 1825 and based at a number of locations before finally settling in Clerkenwell. They established a reputation for fine workmanship and design that was maintained across four generations of Charles Boytons until, along with many other firms, they hit economic difficulties in the early 1930s. In 1934 a new company was formed called Charles Boyton & Son Ltd that continued into the 1970s but no members of the Boyton family were involved in this.
Condition is very good with just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 160 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each spoon is 12.7cm / 5ins long and the set of three together weighs in at a respectable 50.1g / 1.77oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the undersides of the stems, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter II for 1864, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the C B in conjoined circles makers' mark for Charles Boyton II.
Shipping in the UK is £5.00 by Royal Mail Tracked 24.
