3 x William IV Irish Silver Salt Shovels, 1835
This is a smart set of three William IV Irish Sterling Silver Salt Shovels in the traditional Fiddle pattern. The shovels have the initials A E R elegantly engraved at the tops of the stems.
The salt shovels were made in Dublin in 1835 by the silversmith S.G. There is no information about the identity of this silversmith available but he appears to have been a specialist spoon maker who was active in Dublin between about 1830 and 1850.
Overall condition is good, with just a couple of truly tiny dings in the bowls, no salt corrosion and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after nearly 190 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each spoon measures 10.2cm / 4ins in length and the set of three together weighs in at 20.5g / 0.72oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the undersides of the stems, are nice and clear to read with just a little rubbing to the makers' marks. They show the crowned harp for Irish Sterling Silver, the Hibernia assay mark for Dublin, the date letter P for 1835, the William IV duty mark and the S G makers' mark for the mysterious spoon maker.
