4 x George IV Silver Dessert Forks, London, 1830
This is a very heavy set of four George IV Sterling Silver Dessert Forks in the classic Fiddle pattern. The forks are made in London by silversmith Benjamin Davis and date to 1830. Benjamin Davis was a specialist flatware maker who appears to have had quite a short career as pieces with his mark on are only known between 1823 and 1832, making his work quite rare.
This is a really high quality quartet of dessert forks in a heavy gauge of silver. They have no initials or personalisation of any kind making them ideal to move on to a new owner. They could form part of a collection or help to complete a set for use on the dining table today.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents and only the most superficial wear, much less than you would expect in pieces that are 190 years old! Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The forks are each 16.9cm / 6.75" long and the set of 4 together weigh a very substantial 186.1g / 6.5oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the underside of the stems of the forks are crisp and easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter "p" for 1830, the George IV duty mark and the BD makers' mark for Benjamin Davis.
