This is a lovely Set of Four Victorian Sterling Silver Salts and Spoons. The salts are circular with crimped, beaded rims and alternating ribbed panels and chased leaf decoration panels. The insides are lightly gilded. Three of the spoons are original with gilded leaf shaped bowls and the fourth is a contemporary replacement with a shell bowl, which fits in fairly well with the rest of the set.

The salts and spoons were made in Birmingham by T. May & Co in 1889 with the one replacement spoon being made in Birmingham by Thomas Hayes in 1887. T May & Co registered their first mark at Birmingham’s assay office in 1888. The firm is best known for producing watch chain fobs but also produced some tableware and silver rimmed glassware. They had a fairly short existence and disappeared around 1900. Thomas Hayes was active in Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter between 1887 and the early 1900s producing a wide range of tableware, homeware and personal items.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after 135 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each salt is 5cm / 1.9ins in diameter and 3.2cm / 1.2ins high with the three matching spoons being 6.6cm / 2.6ins long and the replacement spoon 6.4cm / 2.5ins long. All together the set weighs in at a very respectable 94.8g / 3.3oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks on the undersides of the bases of the salts and the bowls of the spoons are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter p for 1889, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the trefoil M & Co makers' mark for T May & Co. The replacement spoon has the date letter n for 1887 and the T H makers' mark for Thomas Hayes.
