4 x Victorian Silver Salts, J.E. Bushell, 1900
Here we have a good quality Set of Four late Victorian Sterling Silver Open Salts. The salts are cauldron shaped and stand on three ball feet. Each one has an embossed foliage band around the body to either side of a blank cartouche, with a flared crimped rim around the top.
The salts were made in Birmingham by silversmiths J.E. Bushell and date to 1900, the last full year of Queen Victoria's long reign. Joseph Edward Bushell was originally a partner with George Bushell in the electroplating firm G & J Bushell but they split in 1888 to form two separate companies. Joseph registered his makers’ mark at Birmingham assay office in 1891 and began to produce Sterling Silver items alongside his electroplated wares. The firm specialised almost exclusively in tableware and flatware. They ceased trading in 1945.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents, no salt corrosion and just the most minimal superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 120 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each salt is 5.2cm / 2ins in diameter and stands 3.2cm / 1.25ins high. The set of four together weighs in at a substantial 124.8g / 4.4oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the undersides of the bases, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter a for 1900 and the J.E.B makers' mark for J.E. Bushell.
