6 x Victorian Silver Artemis Buttons, Chester 1900

Here we have a stylish cased set of Six Late Victorian Sterling Silver Buttons. The buttons are circular with a pierced image of the Greek goddess Artemis in the centre with her hunting dogs and arrows beside her. Artemis was the Greek goddess of the hunt and was known as Diana to the Romans. The case is black with a cream satin lining to the lid and a rich green velvet cushion to hold the buttons.
The buttons were made by silversmiths H.W. King & Son and assayed in Chester in 1900, the last full year of Queen Victoria's long reign. The firm was established by Henry William King in London in 1896 and operated from the Silverdale Works in Charterhouse Street. Although based in London their mark is most commonly seen on items assayed in Chester. They produced perfume bottles, decanters and decanter labels, photo frames, buttons and card cases amongst other items. The firm ceased trading around 1920.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings, dents or damage and just the minimal superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 120 years. It seems likely that the buttons were little used. There is some scuffing to the outside of the case but the hinges and clasp are in full working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each button is 1.8cm in diameter and the set of six together (unboxed) weighs in at 13.4g of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, below the seated Artemis figures, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter R for 1900 and the H W K in a shield makers' mark for H.W. King & Son.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the buttons.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
