Art Deco Large Silver Cigarette Case, 1936
Here we have a wonderfully stylish Art Deco Sterling Silver Large Cigarette Case with all over engine turned decoration. There are no initials on the outside but there is a nice presentation inscription on the inside which reads Kathleen to Gordon, Xmas 1938, so it was clearly a very special Christmas present.
The cigarette case, which is double the more common size, was made in Birmingham by W.T. Toghill & Co and dates to 1936, with the presentation engraving clearly being added a couple of years later. W.T. Toghill & Co were active from the mid-1920s to the mid-1960s and almost exclusively produced smoking related items of very good quality.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect in an item of this age (85 years) and use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cigarette case is 17.8cm / 7ins long and 8.5cm / 3.3ins wide. It weighs a very substantial 281.4g / 9.9oz of solid Sterling Silver. It really is quite a special item.
The hallmarks on the inside below the inscription are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter M for 1936 and the W.T.T. & Co makers' mark for W.T. Toghill & Co.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the cigarette case.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
