Art Deco Silver & Enamel Mesh Purse, c.1920s/30s
Here we have a very stylish German Art Deco 900 Silver Mesh Evening Bag. The fine mesh bag drapes from a solid silver frame which has black enamel on the outside and on the top of the clasp. There is a Figaro style chain handle.
The evening bag was made by or for Wilkens & Danger of Bremen in Germany and dates to around the 1920s/30s. Martin Heinrich Wilkens established his business in Bremen in 1810. He was a goldsmith and silversmith who produced small items and also did repairs. His sons joined the business around 1830 and they expanded and began minting coins for Bremen. In 1862 the youngest son Johannes launched a jewellers and silversmiths shop, Wilkens & Danger, which remained in business into the 21st century.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents, no damage to the mesh and very little sign of wear. The clasp snaps closed securely. The box is slightly scuffed but in otherwise good condition. Plese make sure to view all the photographs.
The evening bag is 11.2cm / 4.4ins by 10cm / 3.9ins and the drop from the top of the handle to the bottom of the bag is 27.7cm / 10.9ins. It weighs in at a very respectable 76.7g / 2.7oz.
The inside of the frame is stamped 900 to show that it is of 900/1000 grade silver. The top of the box has the name Wilkens & Danger, Bremen printed onto it.
