Art Deco Silver Butter Knife, Viner's, Sheff, 1936
This is a good quality Art Deco era Sterling Silver Butter Knife in the Hanoverian with Thread pattern. Hanoverian, with its distinctive upturned end, was the most popular pattern of the mid-18th century and was manufactured again as part of the Georgian Revival of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The butter knife is made in Sheffield by highly successful silversmiths Viner's Ltd and dates to 1936, the tumultuous year of the three Kings: George V, Edward VIII and George VI. Viner's Ltd was founded by Adolphe Viener around 1901 with the spelling later Anglicized to Viner. They were extremely successful producing a wide range of silver and silver plate but later ran into difficulties and ceased trading in 1985, the brand name being bought by US firm Oneida.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The butter knife is 16.3cm / 6.4ins long and weighs in at a very respectable 25.1g / 0.89oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the underside of the stem are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter t for 1936 and the E V makers' mark for Emile Viner of Viner's Ltd.
