Art Deco Silver Cigarette Box, Mappin & Webb, 1939

Here we have a very smart, small Art Deco Sterling Silver Cigarette Box. The box is oblong with a hinged lid and engine turned decoration on the top. It is cedar wood lined to keep the tobacco fresh. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind. The box is designed to hold either a single packet of cigarettes or possibly a few cheroots.
The box was made in Birmingham by world famous silversmiths Mappin & Webb and dates to 1939, the height of the Art Deco era. One of the best known names in English silverware, the firm was originally founded in 1810 by Joseph Mappin Snr. In 1859 the company split into two parts which would become Mappin Brothers and Mappin & Webb. They were reunited when Mappin & Webb bought Mappin Brothers in 1902. The Mappin & Webb brand name remains a byword for quality and style to this day.
Condition is good, with just a small ding on one end below the hallmarks and the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate with use and the passage of time. The hinge is in full working order and the lid closes securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The box is 8.6cm / 3.4ins long, 5.2cm / 2ins deep and 2.6cm / 1in high. It weighs 114.5g / 4oz.
The hallmarks, on one end of the box, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter P for 1939 and the Mn & Wb in a shield makers' mark for Mappin & Webb. There is a secondary partial set directly above on the rim of the lid.
Shipping in the UK is £13.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the box.
