Art Deco Silver Cigarette Case, John Rose, 1940
This is a fine quality, heavy Art Deco Sterling Silver Cigarette Case. The case has engine turned decoration to the back and front and an Odeon style cartouche bearing the initials JBS. The inside is gold washed and designed to hold cigarettes in both halves.
The cigarette case is made in Birmingham by silversmith John Rose and dates to 1940. Silver was in very short supply during World War Two so it is unusual to find a chunky case like this one from this period. Founded around 1900, John Rose was in business up until the late 1970s and is best known for their high quality cigar, cigarette and card cases, although they also made a range of other items.
Condition is extremely good and it would seem that the case has only ever seen limited use despite being over 80 years old. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The case is 9.5cm / 3.7ins high, 8cm / 3.1ins across and 1.4cm / 0.55ins deep. It weighs in at a substantial 145g / 5.1oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the inside of the case are crisp and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter Q for 1940 and the J R makers' mark for John Rose.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the case.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
