Art Deco Silver Condiment Set, Jos. Gloster, 1933

This is a stylish Art Deco Sterling Silver 3 Piece Condiment Set with its original black Bakelite liners. The set consists of an open salt, a pepper shaker and a mustard pot. The salt and mustard are capstan shaped with two bands of engine turned decoration whilst the pepper shaker is lighthouse shaped with matching engine turned decoration.
The bakelite liners on all three pieces are permanently set inside the silver, a process patented by Joseph Gloster Ltd in 1930.
The condiment set was made in Birmingham by Joseph Gloster Ltd and dates to 1933. Joseph Gloster registered his first mark at the Birmingham assay office in 1888 and set up business at the Lion Silver Works. The firm produced a very wide range of silverware and were quickly successful, becoming Joseph Gloster Ltd in 1901. They remained in business up until around 1980.
Condition is good, with just a small flat spot and little salt corrosion around the top of the open salt plus the superficial surface wear across the set that has to be expected with use and the passage of time. There are no cracks in the bakelite liners, the hinge on the mustard pot is in full working order and the top of the pepper shaker fits securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The open salt is 6cm / 2.3ins in diameter and 3cm / 1.2ins high, the mustard pot is 6cm / 2.3ins in diameter and 5cm / 1.9ins high and the pepper shaker is 4.7cm / 1.8ins in diameter and 6.6cm / 2.6ins high. All together, the set weighs in at 152.3g / 5.4oz.
The hallmarks, on the underside of each piece, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter J for 1933 and the J.G Ltd makers' mark for Joseph Gloster Ltd.
