Art Deco Silver Cream Jug, Barker Brothers, 1939
Here we have a very stylish Art Deco Sterling Silver Cream Jug from the start of World War Two. The jug is round with a flat base and geometric panels all the way around the body. It is very typically Art Deco in design.
The cream jug is made in Birmingham by Barker Brothers and dates to 1939. The Birmingham date letter changed in July each year, so the 1939 date letter runs from July 1939 to July 1940. With WW2 starting at the beginning of September 1939, silver became a restricted material and many silver manufacturers had their facilities and expertise redirected into the war effort, so silver items from the war years are quite rare.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 80 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The jug is 6.8cm / 2.7ins in diameter at its widest point, 8.7cm / 3.4ins from lip to handle and stands 6.3cm / 2.5ins high. It weighs a substantial 83.3g / 2.9oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the underside of the base are well struck and clear to read. The show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter P for 1939 and the B.B.S Ld for Barker Brothers Silver Ltd.
