Art Deco Silver Cream Jug, Mappin & Webb, 1937

This is a top quality, heavy weight Art Deco Sterling Silver Cream Jug. The jug is in the classic pitcher shape on a low stepped foot, that goes back to Georgian times, to which has been added distinctively Deco detailing below the spout and where the handle joins the body. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The cream jug is made in Sheffield by Mappin & Webb and dates to the height of the Art Deco era in 1937. Mappin & Webb are probably the most famous of all English silver companies with a worldwide reputation for quality and design. They are the current official Crown Jewellers with responsibility for the upkeep of the Royal regalia in the Tower of London and the Queen's personal and state silverware and antique jewellery.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 80 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cream jug is a good size standing 10.6cm / 4.2ins high. It is 9.2cm / 3.6ins from lip to handle and 5.7cm / 2.2ins in diameter at its broadest. It weighs a very substantial 141.1g of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter u for 1937 and the M & W makers' mark for Mappin & Webb. The underside of the base also has the retail stamp of Mappin & Webb Ltd, London & Sheffield.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery Parcel Post, which includes cover for the value of the jug.
