Art Deco Silver Evening Bag, Erich Kellerman, 1922
Here we have a stunning Art Deco Sterling Silver Mesh Evening Bag. The bag has a solid silver frame and chain handle. The silver mesh bag hangs from the frame and has three sets of tassels on the front and a tasselled fringe at the bottom.
The bag, which is probably French in origin, was imported into the UK by Erich Kellerman and assayed in London in 1922. Erich Kellerman was a London based importer of silver items from continental Europe. He sought out pieces that were very different in design to these found in Britain, mostly handbags and purses, smoking accessories and desk items. He remained in business until the start of the First World War.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents in the silver frame, no damage to the silver mesh or chain handle and just a few tassels missing from the fringe at the bottom. It still looks exquisite despite over 100 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The bag measures 36.4cm / 14.3ins from the top of the chain handle to the bottom of the fringe and is 14.8cm / 5.8ins wide. It weighs in at a very substantial 267.1g / 9.4oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the back of the frame, are well struck and clear to read. They show the .925 stamp for imported Sterling Silver, the Leo astrological sign assay mark for London imports, the date letter g for 1922 and the E K importers' mark for Erich Kellerman.
