Art Deco Silver Manicure Set, Reid & Sons, 1936

Here we have a stylish Cased Art Deco Sterling Silver Manicure Set. The 9 piece set includes two pots, a nail buffer, two different pairs of scissors, tweezers, a file, a nail cleaner and a cuticle pusher all in their original fitted box. The silver handles and pot covers have engine turned decoration whilst the polished steel parts are in Sheffield steel. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The set is from Reid & Sons of Newcastle with some items being made by Reid & Sons and assayed in Chester and others being made for them by William Neale & Son and assayed in Birmingham. All the items date to 1936. Reid & Sons was founded by Christian Ker Reid in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1778 and were both retailers and manufacturing silversmiths and jewellers. They sold both their own items and other pieces that they commissioned. The business passed through numerous generations of the Reid family until it was finally bought by Northern Goldsmiths in 1967. The store in Newcastle still trades as Reid & Sons.
Condition is very good with just the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. The narrower pair of scissors have lost some of their polish on one side. The box is a little scuffed on the outside but the interior is in nice condition and the hinges and clasps are in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The implements are between 9.5cm / 3.7ins and 10cm / 3.9ins long, the buffer is 10cm / 3.9ins wide, the scissors are 10cm / 3.9ins and 11cm / 4.3ins respectively and the pots are 3.7cm / 1.4ins in diameter. The set, unboxed, weighs in at 116g / 4.09oz and the cased set at 458g / 16.15oz.
All the silver items are hallmarked for 1936. The Reid & Sons items have the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter L for 1936 and the R & S makers' mark. The William Neale & Son items have the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter M for 1936 and the W N & S Ld makers' mark for William Neale & Son Ltd.
