Art Deco Silver Pepper Shaker, Walker & Hall, 1932
This is a very stylish Art Deco Sterling Silver Pepper Shaker from the 1930s. The shaker is in the classic Art Deco skyscraper style with a flat oblong base and a pull off square lid, which is gilded on the inside.
The pepper shaker was made in Sheffield by famous silversmiths Walker & Hall and dates to 1932, the height of the Art Deco era. Walker & Hall are one of the great names of English silverware. The firm was founded by George Walker in 1845 with Henry Hall joining in 1853 to form Walker & Hall. Hugely successful and very highly regarded they remained in business until they were merged with Mappin & Webb and Elkington & Co to form British Silverware in 1963.
Condition is good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. The lid fits snugly and securely into the top of the body. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The pepper shaker stands 7cm / 2.75ins high and the base measures 3.6cm / 1.4ins by 2.5cm/ 0.98ins. It weighs in at 50g / 1.76oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the base, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter p for 1932 and the W & H makers' mark for Walker & Hall. The base is also stamped with the firm's pennant trademark and the Walker & Hall retail stamp. There is a second partial set of hallmarks on the inside rim of the lid.
